Gluten-Free Doesn’t Mean Boring: 5 Myths Debunked

“Oh, you follow a gluten-free diet? I’m sorry, that must be hard!” – We bet you’ve heard this many times.

Not just a gluten-free diet — any kind of healthy lifestyle or habit is often viewed as boring. What could be the reason? It could be due to misinformation because otherwise, there’s no reason healthy eating should be perceived as boring.

It’s not as if you can’t have ‘string hoppers’ or ‘rotti’ for dinner when you go gluten-free. You still can, but with the right choice. And the right supplier.

Anyway, it’s time to clear the air by debunking these 5 common myths.

Myth 1: Gluten-Free Food Is Tasteless

You’ve probably lost count of how many times you’ve heard this one — it’s one of the biggest myths out there.

When a person goes gluten-free, it does not mean they give up on their taste buds. If sourced right and produced correctly, all-purpose gluten-free flour mix can be the same, or even a better choice than regular flour.

There are flours, such as Cassava flour and banana flour, that can add such flavour and richness to your meals. Yes, without compromising flavour.

We actually took debunking myths a little too seriously and got our hands on an interesting innovation — cereal mix for toddlers and kids. They’re anything but boring.

Myth 2: It’s Only for People with Celiac Disease

Not really! While people with this condition must follow a gluten-free diet as it affects their digestion and allergies, it’s not just for them. Anyone wanting to improve their gut health or simply try something new can go gluten-free. There’s no harm in giving it a shot, as long as you maintain balanced nutrition.

While there is no harm in trying it, you must ensure that the nutritional levels are in check.

Based on the research published by Johns Hopkins Medicine and shared by Selvi Rajagopal, M.D., M.P.H, it’s emphasized that people with no medical condition must remove highly processed foods from their diet before removing gluten.

Myth 3: Gluten-Free Means Ultra-Processed

Of course, it could be if you don’t select the right sourcing. For example, imported gluten-free products are often loaded with additives, preservatives, and artificial flavouring.

But when you go local, you’re more likely to get cleaner, simpler ingredients that are grown and processed with fewer steps and less tampering.

Myth 4: It’s Hard to Cook With

Again, it’s not about cooking because you’re just selecting an alternative flour as gluten isn’t good for you. Whether you’re frying, baking, or kneading dough for your Sri Lankan pol roti, you just need the right flour. Cooking gluten-free food is just like cooking regular food, but you have to be mindful of how you do it.

Plus, when you choose a local supplier, it’s easy to stock up on your goods while also ensuring that they’re not ultra-processed.

Myth 5: You Have to Give Up Local Favourites

This is the coolest one of them all. Who would want to give up their local favourites just because they’re going gluten-free? It breaks our hearts to think of it, which is why we made our all-purpose gluten-free flour to serve the purpose just right.

Yes, you heard that right!

You don’t have to give up rotti, kottu, helapa, or pittu just because you’re gluten-free. When you choose flours made in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan meals, you can still enjoy all the comfort foods you love.
